Hello, I'm not sure anyone will be able to help with this particular issue, but I'm getting desperate enough that any sort of insight will do.
You see, I'm having connection issues with my 3DS to the internet that I haven't had in the past. The connection will be at three bars for a few minutes, drop out completely, and then return a minute or so later. As you can imagine this is frustrating because of how it hinders online play. If my 3DS connection drops for even a second, I'm disconnected from the multiplayer game for good.
The error code message I'm recieving tells me that I should move closer to the access point or clear it of obstructions, and after checking to make sure it was unobstructed and playing the the same room as the access point, I continued to have the same problem. I'm thinking the issue is either in the 3DS systems or the modem, as we've replaced out old modem recently, but I know the issue isn't connecting to the internet. I can successfuly find and connect to the access point every time I try to test the internet settings on the 3DS. The number of bars on my 3DS also stays at 3 all around the house, but as I said, it drops to zero for seemingly no reason for a few seconds at a time. It's not just my 3DS either. I've testing playing Mariokart 7 on my siblings' 3DS systems and watching the internet bar on the home menu and I've had the same problem.
I've done my best to consider possible solutions and I've come up with the following:
1. A wifi extender - As I've said, I highly doubt this would be anything but a waste of money. The connection isn't weak (3 bars all around the house) but it is unstable.
2. Updating the firmware on the router - I'm not sure if this would be relevant to my problem, but the firmware on my router is slightly outdated. The release notes make no mention of issues or fixes with connecting to game consoles. Does anyone know if updating it would have any chance of helping?
The router I'm using is a Version 1 Cisco / Linksys E4200
3. A new modem - I'm not sure this would be relevant either. I can't pinpoint when I started having problems with the internet as I don't play online regularly, and I'm not sure if the modem could be a problem. The lights on the modem indicate a stable connection, and yet my 3DS frequently drops. No other devices in the house are having a similar issue.
The modem I'm using is a Motorola SURFboard cable modem, Model SB5101U
That being said, I'm afraid none that none of these are guarunteed to be helpful in solving my problem, and so I turn to the internet for extra help. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing the short, sudden drops in connection with the 3DS systems? With Animal Crossing: New Leaf right around the corner, it's really driving me up the wall.
Thank you in advance for any insight or assistance you can offer!
